Zimbabwe Coach Kaitano Tembo Hails Super Eagles Ahead of Unity Cup Clash

Zimbabwe head coach Kaitano Tembo has described Nigeria’s senior men’s national team as one of the biggest teams in African football ahead of Tuesday’s Unity Cup clash in London.

Nigeria and Zimbabwe will meet in the opening semi-final fixture of the tournament at The Valley, with both nations battling for a place in the final.

Speaking during Monday’s pre-match press conference, Tembo acknowledged the pedigree and quality of the Super Eagles while stating that Zimbabwe is also working hard to establish themselves among Africa’s top football nations.

“It is a well-known fact that Nigeria is one of the powers in African football and we do respect them,” Tembo said.

“But at the same time, we are also trying to rise as a nation in terms of competing at the highest level.”

The Zimbabwean tactician explained that the Warriors are hoping to build momentum following their recent participation at the Africa Cup of Nations as preparations continue for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

“We are just coming off participating at the Africa Cup of Nations, so we are also trying to build that momentum in terms of preparing for our qualifiers in September,” he added.

“I think this tournament will give us a good platform in terms of preparation. Nigeria, Jamaica, and India give us the perfect opportunity to play against strong opponents.”

Zimbabwe heads into the encounter with confidence after avoiding defeat against Nigeria during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign last year.

However, Tembo insisted that previous meetings between both sides would have little influence on Tuesday’s game, stressing that the Unity Cup presents a different challenge entirely.

“It is always important to play with confidence, but this is a totally different game and tournament,” he stated.

“You always treat each match with caution. Past results do not matter at the moment. What matters is making sure we focus and give our opponents the respect they deserve.”

Tembo will now hope to guide Zimbabwe to a positive result in their first-ever appearance at the Unity Cup as the Warriors continue their steady progress on the international stage.
