NWFL: Nyakno Uko talks up Edwin Okon’s role in Ibom Angels promotion ticket

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Ibom Angels secured their promotion with a decisive 2-0 victory over high-scoring Osun Babes at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar, much to the delight of assistant coach Nyakno Uko.

They has clinched a promotion ticket to the top flight of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship, finishing the season with a perfect record of five wins in five games.

Uko credited the team’s success to the influence of former Nigeria senior women’s national team coach Edwin Okon, describing him as a strong leader and a valuable mentor.

“We are learning from him, and I am very happy working with him because I have learned a lot,” Uko said.

Before facing Ibom Angels, Osun Babes had an impressive record, scoring 17 goals and conceding just one.

However, the Orange Girls managed to outmaneuver them in what Uko described as a challenging match that felt like a final.

“We had to fight because we were prepared to fight, and thank God we won the fight,” he added.

Looking ahead, Uko emphasized the importance of maintaining their top-flight status in the upcoming 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership season, acknowledging the tremendous support from the Akwa Ibom State Government, which has been pivotal to the team’s success.

“From here to the Premiership is going to be more massive. We plan to add a few experienced players to strengthen the squad, and I believe we won’t return to the second division again,” Uko concluded, expressing optimism for the future.
