“A unique African best” — Jay-Jay Okocha praises Ademola Lookman

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Nigeria international Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has lauded Ademola Lookman for his “unique” and extraordinary achievement in winning the CAF Player of the Year award.

Lookman’s triumph at the prestigious ceremony in Marrakesh, Morocco, saw him overcome top competitors such as Serhou Guirassy of Borussia Dortmund, Simon Adingra of Brighton, and Achraf Hakimi of PSG.

Okocha, like many others, was impressed by Lookman’s stellar year, which began with an exceptional performance in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he helped the Super Eagles reach the final, scoring three goals and earning a spot in the tournament’s Team of the Tournament.

The 27-year-old forward also had a standout season with Atalanta, leading them to their first-ever European trophy, with a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Lookman’s performances earned him the coveted CAF Player of the Year award, a ranking of 14th in the Ballon d’Or power rankings, and a spot on the shortlist for the FIFA Player of the Year award.

Okocha believes that Lookman’s award is a reflection not only of his on-field talent but also his exceptional attitude and sportsmanship, both on and off the pitch.

Speaking on Soccer TV’s YouTube page, Okocha explained that the CAF Award takes into account a player’s conduct, interactions with teammates, and respect for coaches, alongside their tactical performances.

“The CAF Award is not just about how well you play on the pitch. Your attitude on the pitch, your reactions to fellow players, and your responses to coaches are all tested before we even talk about tactical performances, an epitome of good sportsmanship and a perfect gentleman,” Okocha said.

Okocha emphasized that Lookman’s award was a testament to his dedication and professionalism, describing him as “a unique African BEST Player of the Year.”

“Lookman is a unique African BEST Player of the Year, not just African BEST. Go and verify what I’m saying—many are still testifying about him, and more will do so. His award is a reward for dedication and hard labour,” Okocha concluded.
