Super Falcons Poised and Confident Ahead of Quarterfinal Clash with Zambia

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

As the Super Falcons prepare for a high-stakes quarterfinal showdown against Zambia, defender Ashleigh Plumptre has shared insights into the team’s mindset, preparations, and personal motivations ahead of the clash.

“Preparations have gone well after a competitive group stage,” said Plumptre. “The mood in camp is calm and exciting. We’re all in good spirits.”

Nigeria enters the quarterfinal as one of the tournament’s standout defensive units, having not conceded a goal so far.

“We take pride in defending as a team, just as much as attacking,” she added. “Zambia are strong offensively, but we’ve prepared for the whole team.”

One of the key players to watch in the upcoming match is Zambia’s captain, Barbra Banda—a player Plumptre respects both on and off the pitch.

“I respect her a lot, especially after what she went through during the gender verification saga. I look forward to the test of playing against her.”

Plumptre was recently named in the tournament’s group stage Best XI, an honor she humbly attributes to the collective effort of the Super Falcons.

“I was surprised to be named in the Best XI. I’m grateful, but it reflects the whole team’s effort. We have many players who deserved it.”

Since joining the national team in 2021, Plumptre has embraced the responsibility and pride of wearing the green and white.

“This squad is incredibly talented. Being part of this team is a huge responsibility, and I’m proud to contribute.”

Off the pitch, Plumptre’s passion for football development continues to grow. With previous coaching experience at youth level, she has ambitions to give back through football in the UK and Middle East.

“Football is about communication and connection beyond the game. I want to be involved in youth development wherever I can.”
