Osimhen, Lookman lead Nigeria’s World Cup survival bid vs Lesotho in Polokwane

By Dayo Awoniyi

Nigeria’s Super Eagles face a high-stakes encounter on Friday as they take on Lesotho in a must-win 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa.

With their qualification hopes hanging in the balance, the three-time African champions trail Group C leaders Benin Republic and second-placed South Africa by three points. Only an outright victory—and favourable results elsewhere—will keep their World Cup dream alive ahead of their final group match in Uyo.

Head coach Eric Chelle is expected to rely heavily on the attacking prowess of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, two of Africa’s most in-form forwards. The pair will be supported by Moses Simon in a front three tasked with breaking down a resilient Lesotho side.

However, Chelle will have to navigate injury setbacks, with Olaoluwa Aina, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Raphael Onyedika, and Cyriel Dessers all unavailable. On the positive side, Osimhen returns to the squad after missing the last outing against South Africa due to injury.

In goal, Stanley Nwabali is set to start behind a defensive line comprising captain William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, Bruno Onyemaechi, and Semi Ajayi. The midfield engine room will likely feature Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, and Alhassan Yusuf.

Nigeria will also have attacking depth on the bench with Samuel Chukwueze, Terem Moffi, Tolu Arokodare, and Jerome Akor Adams available for selection.

Friday’s clash is more than a qualifier—it is a defining moment for the Super Eagles, a battle for redemption, pride, and a place at football’s biggest stage.
