Adegboye Onigbinde urges Super Eagles to focus on victory against Benin

Former CAF and FIFA Technical Instructor Adegboye Onigbinde has urged the Nigeria’s senior men’s national team to concentrate fully on defeating Benin Republic in their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
Heading into the final round of Group C fixtures, Eric Chelle’s men sit third on the log with 14 points from nine games — having recorded three wins, five draws, and one defeat.
Nigeria trail group leaders Benin by three points and second-placed South Africa by just one, meaning the Super Eagles must beat Benin by at least two goals and hope South Africa fail to defeat Rwanda to secure automatic qualification.
Speaking with Completesports.com, Onigbinde expressed optimism that Nigeria can still make it to the World Cup but emphasized the importance of focus and execution.
“Like I always tell you, I am not too close to Nigerian football. However, as a Nigerian, I want the Super Eagles to do well in every endeavour.
“It’s a pity that we find ourselves in this situation, but then, I expect the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Whether or not we are adequately prepared for that is what I don’t know.
“The players must do the needful first against Benin and hope for favours elsewhere.”
The high-stakes encounter will take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, with kickoff scheduled for Tuesday evening.
