NWFL Premiership Placed on Temporary Hold After Week 7 Over U-20 National Team Call-Ups

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has announced a temporary suspension of the ongoing 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership following the completion of Matchday Seven fixtures.

According to a statement issued by the league’s management, the decision was taken after a formal complaint was submitted to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) by one of the participating clubs. The affected club reportedly has more than five players currently invited to the U-20 National Team camp, a situation that significantly impacts its ability to field a competitive team during this period.

In light of this development, the NWFL confirmed that the league will resume with Matchday Eight fixtures on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

The league further noted that due to tight scheduling constraints within the 2025/2026 season calendar, only a one-week mid-season break will be observed.

Adjusted fixtures reflecting the revised schedule have been circulated to all clubs, with the NWFL urging teams to take note of the changes and ensure strict compliance.

The statement, signed by Modupe Shabi, Chief Operating Officer of the NWFL, reaffirmed the league’s commitment to fairness and smooth competition management as the season progresses.

The NWFL Premiership remains Nigeria’s top-tier women’s football competition, and the temporary pause is expected to ensure balance and integrity as national team commitments overlap with league fixtures.
