Lagos FA Boss, Hajj Gafar Hails NFF Statutes Amendment As Landmark Reform

Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, Hajji Gafar, has described the recent revision of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) statutes as a major milestone in aligning Nigerian football with global best practices.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos, Gafar said the amendment — coming after 16 years — represents a “monumental and unprecedented achievement” under the leadership of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau.
Reacting to the NFF Extraordinary Assembly held in Yenagoa, he described the development as a masterstroke that signals a new era for the sport in the country.
“The outlook is entirely positive. The revision of the statutes after 16 years is a monumental and unprecedented achievement. It marks the beginning of a new era for Nigerian football. Congress collectively agreed on the need to update the statutes to reflect modern realities and align with international standards,” Gafar said.
Boost For Inclusivity And Investment
Gafar noted that the revised statutes would enhance inclusivity in decision-making, particularly with increased representation for domestic leagues.
Clubs in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will now have five representatives with voting rights, while the Nigeria National League (NNL) will have four delegates, including two with voting rights.
According to him, this structure will encourage private investment by promoting transparency, accountability and broader stakeholder participation.
“It will encourage private investors to come into the league because they see transparency, inclusivity and accountability,” he added.
Call For NLO Professional Transition
Gafar also urged the Nationwide League One (NLO) to transition into a fully professional structure, citing FIFA provisions that allow players aged 15 and above to sign professional contracts under proper guidance.
He explained that removing the term “Amateur” from the league creates a pathway for structured player development and a more competitive environment for young talents.
Backing Gusau For Continuity
The Lagos FA boss commended the NFF leadership for maintaining stability in a complex football environment, expressing support for Gusau’s potential re-election.
“Managing football in a country like Nigeria is not an easy task. With over 200 million passionate people, the challenges are enormous. For the current leadership to have sustained stability over the past three and a half years is commendable. In my view, they deserve continuity.”
He also highlighted improvements in infrastructure, including the FIFA Goal Project facilities in Abuja, and praised the federation’s efforts to involve stakeholders in governance.
Gafar concluded that the statutes amendment and broader reforms would strengthen Nigerian football’s foundation and drive long-term growth across all levels of the game.
