Martins recalls Yakubu Rivalry, calls for more competition with Osimhen in Super Eagles attack
Former Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins has called for stronger competition among Nigeria’s forwards, warning against excessive dependence on Victor Osimhen.
Martins believes Nigeria need another striker capable of competing seriously for the starting position rather than having the attack built around Osimhen whenever he is available.
His comments came ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying opener against Madagascar, with Osimhen ruled out of the match after failing to recover from a muscle injury.
Martins drew on his own international experience, recalling the competition he faced during his Super Eagles career from established forwards including Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Osaze Odemwingie and Julius Aghahowa.
“You need someone who is going to compete with all the players, not just Osimhen. In my time, we had Yakubu there.”
He explained that the competition for places during his generation meant that every striker had to remain ready to take advantage of an opportunity.
“If Yakubu starts the game, I will be on the bench waiting. I know if he is out and I score, I am going to start the next game. We are always like that.”
For Martins, that competitive environment is important if Nigeria are to build an attack capable of functioning regardless of the availability of its leading forward.
His argument comes at a time when Osimhen’s absence has again forced the national team to consider alternatives.
Taiwo Awoniyi has been drafted into the squad as Osimhen’s replacement, giving the Coventry City striker an opportunity to demonstrate that Nigeria can rely on other options in attack.
Awoniyi has made 10 appearances for the Super Eagles and scored twice, according to the report, and now has another opportunity to strengthen his claim for a regular role.
Martins’ comments also echo his own experience of fighting for a place in a Nigeria attack that contained several established forwards.
The former Inter Milan and Newcastle United striker has previously backed Chelle’s continued work with the Super Eagles, saying the coach should be given time to develop his ideas and build for the future.
Nigeria’s opening AFCON qualifier against Madagascar will therefore provide more than an opportunity to collect three points. It will also offer Chelle the chance to assess the depth and competitiveness of his attacking options.
With Osimhen unavailable, the performance of the other forwards could influence the shape of Nigeria’s attack in the matches ahead.
