Uba Sani’s sports drive: Kaduna hosts Super Sand Eagles ahead of Beach Soccer AFCON Qualifiers
Kaduna State has strengthened its push to use sports as a tool for youth engagement and development by hosting Nigeria’s Super Sand Eagles ahead of their upcoming 2026 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The hosting forms part of Governor Uba Sani’s broader sports-development drive and Kaduna’s growing involvement in beach soccer, with the state providing a platform for the national team to prepare for its crucial West African qualifying tie.
The Super Sand Eagles are scheduled to face Ghana over two legs in the second round of the 2026 Beach Soccer AFCON qualifiers, with the first leg billed for October 9–11 and the return fixture scheduled for October 16–18.
The eventual winner of the tie will move closer to securing a place at the continental finals in Senegal, where the competition will also serve as Africa’s pathway to the 2027 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.
Kaduna’s involvement provides another indication of the growing importance being attached to beach soccer in the state, particularly as stakeholders seek to expose young people to alternative sporting opportunities beyond traditional football.
The Super Sand Eagles remain one of Nigeria’s most successful beach-soccer sides, having won the African championship twice. The team has also represented Nigeria at several FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup editions.
Their return to competitive continental qualification is particularly significant after Nigeria missed recent editions of the Beach Soccer AFCON and will now have to overcome Ghana in a demanding two-leg encounter.
The Kaduna programme also comes as beach soccer continues to expand across different parts of Nigeria. The Nigeria Beach Soccer League has identified Kaduna, Kebbi, Akwa Ibom, Anambra and other locations as important centres in the development of the sport.
According to stakeholders, increased investment in beach soccer can create opportunities for young players while providing a pathway for former national-team players, coaches, referees and administrators to contribute their experience to the next generation.
The development drive has also extended to women’s beach soccer, with stakeholders recently outlining plans for awareness camps in Lagos, Kebbi, Abuja and Kaduna, as well as demonstration matches involving female footballers.
Plans have also been discussed for a maiden Nigerian Women’s Beach Soccer Cup involving teams drawn from the country’s six geopolitical zones, reflecting efforts to expand the sport beyond the men’s national team.
For Kaduna, hosting the Super Sand Eagles provides an opportunity to combine elite sporting activity with grassroots engagement while further positioning the state as a destination for major sporting events.
The state’s support for the national team’s preparations is therefore expected to contribute not only to the immediate AFCON qualification campaign but also to the longer-term development and visibility of beach soccer in Kaduna and Nigeria.
