Peter Obi criticises sparse NPFL crowds after Ikorodu City beat Enugu Rangers

Presidential candidate of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has criticised the poor attendances at Nigerian Premier Football League matches, saying the country is failing to turn its substantial sporting talent into opportunities for young people.

Obi was speaking after watching Ikorodu City defeat reigning champions Enugu Rangers 2-0 in a Matchday Six fixture at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

The former presidential candidate attended the match alongside Ikorodu City President Sanmi Doherty and expressed concern that fewer than 2,000 spectators were present in a stadium with a capacity of around 10,000.

He said the low turnout reflected wider problems with fan engagement and the development of domestic football in Nigeria.

“It pained me to see how poorly we are developing sports in Nigeria. A stadium with a capacity of about 10,000 had fewer than 2,000 spectators,” Obi said.

He added that Nigeria had abundant athletic ability but lacked the structures and long-term commitment needed to support young people pursuing careers in sport.

“Nigeria has no shortage of sporting talent. What we lack is the vision and commitment to turn that talent into opportunities for our young people,” he said.

Obi also argued that sport should be viewed as more than entertainment, saying it could contribute to employment, youth development and wider social progress if properly organised.

“Sport is not merely entertainment; properly developed, it can be a powerful tool for youth development, employment, and social transformation,” he said.

His comments came after Ikorodu City produced a notable result against Enugu Rangers, who are the reigning champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League.
