Barcelona could revisit Gvardiol interest amid Manchester City uncertainty

Barcelona are keeping a close watch on Josko Gvardiol’s situation at Manchester City, with the Croatian defender previously identified as a major target by the Catalan club.
Manchester City’s position could change significantly if they receive a severe punishment, such as relegation or a points deduction. Such a sanction could lead several of the club’s leading players to reconsider their futures, particularly given the depth of talent in the squad.
The Premier League announced last Tuesday that an independent commission had found Manchester City guilty of all the alleged breaches relating to the competition’s financial rules over nine seasons, from 2009/10 to 2017/18.
The club was also found guilty of three of the four charges concerning its alleged failure to co-operate with the Premier League’s investigation.
According to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona closely monitored Gvardiol last season. The 24-year-old is regarded as a physically powerful defender with outstanding defensive ability, capable of stopping opposition attacks and helping to build play from the back with composure and control.
His versatility was another key attraction for Barcelona. Although primarily a centre-back, Gvardiol is also able to operate effectively as a full-back.
For Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick and his coaching staff, those qualities made Gvardiol an ideal candidate to strengthen the club’s defence for the current season. However, a deal was never straightforward.
One obstacle was the player’s high salary, with Manchester City also prepared to improve his terms. The Premier League club viewed Gvardiol as an essential part of the team and did not want to lose him.
Barcelona made enquiries about his position, but Gvardiol was not interested in leaving Manchester City, particularly because he had received an offer to extend his contract. Barcelona therefore turned its attention to other options, including Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni.
Gvardiol eventually signed a new contract with Manchester City at the end of July, extending his stay until 30 June 2031 and receiving an increase in salary.
Any serious punishment for Manchester City could now alter the circumstances surrounding the player, although there is no indication that Barcelona have made a fresh approach. The club’s previous interest means Gvardiol remains a defender whose situation is being watched closely in Catalonia.
