Jesus-Ronaldo dispute raises fresh Al Nassr questions

Georgy Jesus’ decision to leave Cristiano Ronaldo out of Portugal’s starting line-up has raised questions that extend beyond the national team, after the forward reacted angrily and left the camp.
The episode is particularly significant because Jesus previously worked with Ronaldo during one of Al Nassr’s most successful periods. Just months after the pair celebrated titles and victories in Riyadh, Jesus became the coach willing to place the Portugal captain on the bench and make clear that neither the player’s status nor his reaction would change his thinking.
Jesus’ stance has challenged the long-held assumption that Ronaldo’s name guarantees him a place in the starting XI. Rather than treating him as untouchable, the manager made a clear tactical decision and said his ideas could not be changed by any player.
That could have implications for Ronaldo’s position at Al Nassr. Jesus’ action has removed some of the psychological barrier around leaving the Portuguese forward out, showing that a coach can make such a call if he is prepared to accept the consequences.
Postecoglou faces a difficult decision
Ange Postecoglou has not appeared to be seeking a fresh dispute with Ronaldo, but the course of the season could eventually put him in a similar position. Ronaldo has not yet produced the level expected of him for Al Nassr, either domestically or in Asian competitions, making his automatic selection a matter for footballing debate.
The Portuguese forward’s involvement could become more difficult to justify if Postecoglou concludes that his team needs different solutions in certain matches. Jesus has demonstrated that Ronaldo’s reputation does not provide complete protection from a coach’s tactical decisions.
However, a similar move at Al Nassr would carry greater consequences than it might in an international match. Ronaldo is central not only to the team but also to a wider sporting and commercial project, while his contract is worth a significant amount. Repeatedly leaving him out could quickly change a technical decision into a serious dispute if the player felt his role was being reduced.
Ronaldo’s response to the Portugal decision showed how tensions can develop when his wishes conflict with a manager’s view. If he accepts a place on the bench and answers on the pitch, the matter could remain there. But a direct confrontation would leave Al Nassr facing a problem that went beyond one player’s absence from the starting line-up.
Contract makes an exit complicated
Reports indicate that Ronaldo earns an annual salary approaching 200 million euros. That figure would make any attempt to terminate his contract or end the relationship with Al Nassr financially, legally and administratively complicated.
There is a clear distinction between dropping Ronaldo and removing him from the club. The former is a decision available to a coach; the latter would require far more difficult calculations.
Jesus may therefore have opened the door to a new phase in the way Ronaldo is managed. If Postecoglou chooses to follow the same path, Ronaldo will have to respond either by re-establishing himself through his performances or by entering a confrontation that could create the biggest test of his future with Al Nassr since his arrival in Riyadh.
