Ballon d’Or 2026: Messi, Yamal, Kane and Mbappe headline open race

The 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or will be awarded on Monday at the London Palladium, with Lionel Messi, Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe leading a contest that has no clear favourite.

Voting closed on 28 September, leaving the outcome in the hands of the journalists selecting the winner. Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi are also among the contenders.

The award has traditionally been decided by a combination of individual performances, major trophies and decisive goals. However, the public campaigns surrounding leading candidates have become an increasingly important part of the contest.

Mbappe makes case with World Cup records

Mbappe believes his performances during the year merit serious consideration, arguing that the award should recognise exceptional displays rather than merely ordinary performances.

The Real Madrid and France forward scored 10 goals at the World Cup, winning the Golden Boot and becoming the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer.

His case is weakened by Real Madrid’s failure to win a trophy and France’s inability to secure the World Cup. His individual achievements therefore compete with the greater team success enjoyed by some of his rivals.

Kane points to Bayern double

Harry Kane has based his claim on historic goalscoring figures and a highly successful season with Bayern Munich.

The England striker won a domestic league and cup double while continuing to rank among Europe’s most prolific forwards. Although England did not win the World Cup and Kane failed to score beyond the round of 16, he believes his overall campaign deserves recognition.

Kane has argued that the combination of individual excellence and team success gives him an advantage over players who ended the season without major trophies. He also believes his domestic double strengthens his position in an unusually tight race.

Yamal combines major honours with rapid rise

Lamine Yamal won LaLiga with Barcelona before lifting the World Cup with Spain, giving him a strong case based on collective achievement.

His individual contribution at the tournament was more limited, with one goal and no assists. That has raised questions over whether his performances were sufficient to secure the prize, despite the quality of his overall season.

The Barcelona forward has nevertheless said he belongs among the leading players in the world and suggested the contest should come down to himself and Mbappe.

The award is being contested during a period of transition after years dominated by Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi has won the prize eight times and Ronaldo five, while Luka Modric was the only player to interrupt their hold during the 2010s, winning in 2018.

The 2020s have produced a broader range of winners: Messi has claimed the award twice, alongside Karim Benzema, Rodri and Ousmane Dembele.

Rodri’s 2024 victory also demonstrated the influence of campaigning. Manchester City reportedly made him available for several interviews to raise his international profile, highlighting the importance clubs attach to individual recognition and the tensions that can arise when their leading players compete for the honour.

With the World Cup and Champions League carrying significant weight, the contrasting records of Yamal, Mbappe and Kane have made the final decision particularly difficult. The winner will be crowned the world’s best player after the journalists’ vote.
