Barcelona hopeful Jules Kounde will return for Deportivo Alaves

Barcelona have received encouraging news on Jules Kounde, with the defender understood to have a strong chance of being available for Saturday’s La Liga meeting with Deportivo Alaves.

The match, which takes place on 31 October 2026, will be the club’s 11th league fixture of the season. Kounde missed the Clasico after suffering a sprain to his left ankle, although his recovery has reportedly been progressing positively, according to Sport.

The France international had been close to featuring in the Clasico, but Barcelona’s coaching staff decided not to take a risk by selecting him. His prospects of returning against Deportivo Alaves are therefore considered better than those of the club’s other injured players, provided his rehabilitation continues without complications.

Kounde addressed Barcelona supporters in a message posted on Instagram, calling for unity after what he described as a difficult period.

“Difficult week. It is time to stay united, Barcelona supporters, more than ever,” he wrote.

“There is no doubt that we will come out of this period stronger.”

The situation surrounding Xavi Espart is more concerning. The player was forced to leave the Clasico during the first half because of an injury, with Alejandro Balde coming on as his replacement in the 29th minute.

Barcelona later confirmed the injury in a statement and said Xavi Espart would be sidelined for 7 weeks.

The growing list of injuries has left head coach Hansi Flick with fewer defensive options ahead of the fixture against Deportivo Alaves. Flick has not ruled out calling on players from the reserve team if necessary.

“We do not have many options in defence, so we have to manage the situation. We may have to promote some players from the club’s academy,” said the manager.
