Barcelona v Atletico Madrid moved forward for 2027 Spanish Super Cup

Barcelona’s La Liga meeting with Atletico Madrid has been brought forward by two months to avoid a clash with the 2027 Spanish Super Cup in Istanbul.

The match, along with Real Sociedad’s fixture against Real Madrid, was originally scheduled for the weekend of 7 February. La Liga has now rescheduled both matches for the first week of December, with the revised dates falling between 2 and 4 December.

The change affects the two fixtures from matchweek 23 involving the four clubs who will contest the Spanish Super Cup in February.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will meet in the first semi-final on 2 February 2027, while Real Sociedad will face Real Madrid in the second semi-final on 3 February. The final is scheduled for 6 February.

The decision to revise the domestic programme was reported by Spanish radio station Cadena COPE and is intended to give the four participating clubs a clearer schedule before the tournament begins.

Why the Spanish Super Cup is being held in Istanbul

Istanbul will host the next edition of the Spanish Super Cup after Saudi Arabia was unable to stage the competition. Saudi Arabia had hosted the previous editions, but the tournament’s dates coincide with the country hosting the Asian Cup.

The rescheduled La Liga matches will take place at the same time as the second round of the Copa del Rey, which is due to be played on 2 December.

That scheduling overlap will not affect Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Real Sociedad or Real Madrid. All four clubs will enter the Copa del Rey in the last 16, meaning they will not be involved in the second-round fixtures.

The revised arrangements allow the clubs to complete their league commitments before travelling to Istanbul for a Spanish Super Cup featuring four of the country’s leading sides.
