Merih Demiral says he understands Al Ahli team-mate Roger Ibanez better than his wife

Merih Demiral says his long-standing partnership with Roger Ibanez at Al Ahli has become so familiar that he can predict the Brazilian defender’s actions before they happen – even claiming he knows him better than his wife.

The Turkey international has played alongside Ibanez in central defence since the pair joined Al Ahli in summer 2023. Speaking on The Mo Show podcast, Demiral said he felt fortunate to have developed such a close understanding with his team-mate.

“I am very lucky to play alongside Ibanez, and I am sure he feels the same,” Demiral said. “This is our fourth year together and I hope we can play alongside each other for many more years.”

Demiral explained that their understanding was evident during a training session the previous week, when Ibanez was preparing to make a move.

“There is something special between us,” he said. “We spoke about it naturally last week at training. He wanted to do something and noticed that I knew what he was going to do.”

The defender added: “He said to me, ‘You already know what I am going to do.’ I told him, ‘Of course. I know you better than my wife.’ I see you more than I see my children, and I know everything you are going to do, even off the pitch.”

The partnership between Demiral and Ibanez has been a key part of Al Ahli’s defence since their arrival. The pair have helped the club win the AFC Champions League Elite twice and the Saudi Super Cup once.

Demiral praises Al Ahli’s unity

Demiral also spoke about the quality that sets Al Ahli apart from other clubs, having joined the Saudi side nearly three years ago.

He said the defining feature of the club was the relationship shared by its players, supporters and wider organisation.

“I believe what makes our team and our club different is that we are one family,” Demiral said.

“We are one entity – the fans, the club and the players together. That is our secret, and I believe nobody else has it.

“We will preserve it. As long as we are here, we will maintain this spirit, so there is no need to worry about that.”
