Nigeria U17 0-1 Morocco U17: Atlas Cubs hand Eaglets first group stage loss in decade

By Monsurah Olatunji

The Nigeria U17 men’s national team suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Morocco in their second group B fixture at the ongoing 2023 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Algeria.
Tochukwu Ogboji’s own goal in the second minute was all that was needed to hand Morocco the victory against the Golden Eaglets.
The Golden Eaglets dominated the game from start to end but were too wasteful in front of the goal and paid the price for their wastefulness.
Nigeria recovered from the early setback to control the game, playing some quality football that led to four wonderful chances that should have seen the Nigerians score at least two goals.
However, the two-time African champions failed to turn dominance into goals heading into the break.
In the second half, Nigeria kept pushing to get back into the mix, but were unable to break down Morocco’s defense.
Nduka Ugbade-led boys missed more chances while Morocco was content to sit back and soak up the pressure as held on to their slender lead and defended stoutly.
Morocco’s goalkeeper was up to the task as he superbly saved to stop Nigeria and keep his Atlas side ahead.
With two wins from two games, Morocco has booked a ticket to the quarterfinal of the U-17 AFCON at the expense of the West Africans.
The defeat marks the first for the Golden Eaglets in an AFCON group-stage match since 2013 against Ivory Coast.
