Victor Osimhen: Nigeria striker named Italian Serie A best striker

Nigeria international forward Victor Osimhen has been named the best striker of the 2022/23 Serie A season, after a remarkable campaign with Napoli.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a phenomenal campaign helping the Partenopei to a historic Scudetto victory.

The red-hot poacher scored 25 goals and counting in Serie A this season, the most by an African player in a single Italian top-flight campaign.

His goalscoring run smashed many records, including breaking Samuel Eto’o George Weah’s records for the most goal scored by an African in a single Serie A season and an all-time league goal record by an African respectively.

The Nigerian striker also won the Serie A Player of the Month award multiple times this season.

However, the 24-year-old forward beats Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez and AC Milan striker Rafael Leao for the best striker award and is on course to scoop the Capocannoniere Golden Boot award after moving four goals clear of the second-highest goalscorer this season.

As the 2022–23 campaign comes to a close on Sunday, the Lagos-born superstar becomes the first Napoli player and also the first African player to win the award.

With his 30-goal haul across all competitions this season, Osimhen has 10 more than his previous best season when he scored 20 times for Charleroi in Belgium.
