NWFL Premiership Title Race Goes Down to Final Day

The 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership title will be decided on the final day of the Super Six playoffs after another dramatic round of fixtures in Port Harcourt left three teams battling for the crown.

Matchday Four produced crucial results across the standings, with league leaders Edo Queens and defending champions Bayelsa Queens securing vital victories, while Abia Angels frustrated Nasarawa Amazons with a goalless draw that kept the championship race wide open.

With one round of matches remaining, Edo Queens, Bayelsa Queens and Nasarawa Amazons are still in contention for Nigeria’s top women’s football prize.

Bayelsa Queens strengthened their title defence hopes with an impressive 2-0 win over FC Robo Queens, making it back-to-back victories in the playoffs.

The Prosperity Girls wasted no time asserting themselves, taking the lead just one minute into the encounter through Kindness Ifeanyi, whose early strike set the tone for the contest.

Bayelsa controlled proceedings for large periods and eventually doubled their advantage in the 83rd minute. Substitute Vera Samuel made an instant impact, scoring with her first touch after coming off the bench to secure all three points.

The result keeps Bayelsa firmly in the hunt for a successful title defence heading into the decisive final round.

Elsewhere, Abia Angels delivered another resolute performance to hold former champions Nasarawa Amazons to a goalless draw.

Both sides created chances in a tightly contested affair, but disciplined defending and solid goalkeeping ensured neither team could break the deadlock.

Nasarawa Amazons came closest to snatching victory deep into stoppage time when they were awarded a penalty. However, Adaobi Okah failed to convert from the spot, allowing Abia Angels to earn a valuable point and deny the Amazons the opportunity to take control of the title race.

Although the draw ended Abia Angels’ slim championship aspirations, it also ensured the race remains finely balanced heading into the final day.

In the day’s final fixture, Edo Queens maintained their grip on top spot with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over hosts Rivers Angels in an entertaining South-South derby.

The Benin-based side opened the scoring in the 39th minute through in-form forward Precious Oscar.

Rivers Angels responded after the break and drew level in the 72nd minute when substitute Abasiofon Uwah found the back of the net to set up a tense finale.

However, Edo Queens restored their advantage just five minutes later as Chioma Moses struck what proved to be the winning goal. The league leaders held firm in the closing stages to secure a crucial victory and remain in pole position.

With one round left to play, Edo Queens sit atop the Super Six standings on nine points, while Bayelsa Queens and Nasarawa Amazons trail closely on seven points each.

Abia Angels, impressive in their maiden Super Six campaign, occupy fourth place on five points and are mathematically out of the title race. FC Robo Queens and Rivers Angels, both on three points, can no longer challenge for the championship.

As the playoffs enter their final round, all eyes will be on Port Harcourt, where Edo Queens, Bayelsa Queens and Nasarawa Amazons will battle for domestic supremacy in what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the NWFL Premiership season.
