Nigeria defender returns to Scottish side Rangers

Nigeria defender Leon Aderemi Balogun has rejoined Scottish Premiership side Rangers and signed a year deal with the Glasgow based club.

Balogun had an excellent two years from 2020 to 2022 at Ibrox, contributing to the delivery of title number 55 in 2021, the Scottish Cup in 2022 and the run to the Europa League final also in 2022.

He has spent the last year at English Championship side, Queens Park Rangers (QPR), and also has Bundesliga pedigree having had spells with Hannover 96, Werder Bremen, Fortuna Dusseldorf and Mainz 05, Premier League experience with Brighton and Hove Albion, and international honours with Nigeria, including at a FIFA World Cup and an African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He became the seventh summer signing of Michael Beale’s side ahead of the 2023/2024 campaign. Last season with QPR, Balogun played 15 matches (plus 1 as a substitute).

He had 1 shot on target from a total of 4 shots and scored 1 goal (0.32 xG). Balogun averaged 32 passes per match with a pass completion rate of 75%, and had 0 assists.

The former Wigan Athletic defender received 4 yellow cards and 0 red cards.
