Nigeria loses Africa Cup of Nations 2027 hosting rights bid to East African trio

Nigeria will not host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the hosts for the 2025 and 2027 tournaments on Wednesday.

The joint bid of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania got the hosting rights for AFCON 2027 ahead of Nigeria and Benin Republic’s bid.

The Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football to vote on the bids for both 2025 and 2027 in Cairo.

North African country, Morocco will host the 2025 AFCON after Ivory Coast stage the 2023 edition of the tournament next year.

Nigeria put forward the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja; Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt; Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo; Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos; Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna; Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba; Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City and; Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano. In the Republic of Benin, the Stade Mathieu Kerekou in Cotonou and the Stade Charles de Gaulle in Porto Novo are listed.

The West African country hosted the AFCON twice in 1980 where the senior men’s national team won their first title.

In 2000, Nigeria and Ghana co-hosted the competition which Cameron emerged champions.

The country will have to try again in its bid to host the AFCON after 2027.
