Ademola Lookman not getting carried away by Ballon d’Or nomination

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria international Ademola Lookman has remained calm and focused despite receiving a prestigious nomination for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, emphasizing that his priorities remain unchanged.

The 26-year-old winger has enjoyed a stellar season, both at club and international level. Lookman played a crucial role in Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, scoring three goals in seven appearances.

He also made history by becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in a UEFA Europa League final, helping Atalanta secure their first major trophy since 1963.

Lookman’s stellar performances earned him a place on the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist, making him the eighth Nigerian footballer to receive such recognition. He is also the only African player on this year’s list.

Despite the accolades, Lookman has insisted that he remains grounded and focused on the things that have brought him success.

“I don’t know if people’s perception of me has changed, but I just try to improve and become stronger every day,” Lookman said in an interview with The Guardian.

“This is the most important thing for me. I try to work hard on a daily basis for my character and my goals, and I’ve remained the same person as before.”

The former Everton man, who won the UEFA Champions League Man of the Match award in Atalanta’s victory over Shakhtar Donetsk, added: “We have a very strong group of attackers, great players with different characteristics.

“Each one wants to play to show their qualities. Being able to take the field with players like this is wonderful for me. They help me become better.”

Lookman’s refusal to let the nomination change his approach underlines his dedication to continuous improvement, both as an individual and as a key contributor to his team.

As he looks to build on his impressive form, all eyes will be on the Nigerian forward to see what he achieves next.
