AFCON 2023: No cause for alarm as Victor Osimhen returns to full training
By Monsurah Olatunji
Victor Osimhen gave Nigeria injury panic ahead of their Round of 16 clash against Cameroon at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
The Napoli striker was a notable absence at the team’s training on Wednesday due to a tummy bug.
However, team officials revealed that there was no cause for concern after the player returned and trained fully with the rest of the Super Eagles squad the following day.
Nigeria have scored three goals, with the Africa Player of the Year involved in all three, scoring once. His header gave the Super Eagles the equalizer in the 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea in their opening game.
The former Lille star also earned the penalty that Troost-Ekong scored for a triumph against the hosts in their second game.
His attacking run to meet Moses Simon’s cross forced the own goal that helped Nigeria to victory against Guinea-Bissau and booked their spot in the next round.
Fenerbache defender Osayi-Samuel also did not train on Wednesday after he was only patched up for the final group game against Guinea Bissau after a training ground accident.
On Saturday, the Super Eagles will have to go past Cameroon to reach the quarterfinal of the 2023 AFCON, where either Angola or Namibia will be the next hurdle in their quest to win a fourth continental crown.
