The Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan will be the battleground as Nigeria gears up for their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations opener against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, January 14.
The Super Eagles have an illustrious history in the tournament making their 20th appearance and have won the title three times.
The last time the tournament was held in Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria were beaten finalists in a 3-1 defeat to Cameroon in 1984.
Jose Peseiro-led team will be keen to notch up title number four to equal their West African rivals Ghana as they last won the trophy in 2013.
However, Equatorial Guinea aren’t pushovers as they made the quarter-finals in their debut back in 2012 and then earned their best finish (4th) at the 2015 edition.
The National Thunder then forced their way out of their group in 2021 featuring the Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, and Algeria, who were the reigning champions at the time.
Juan Micha’s troops will be keen to create more history, starting with a Sunday afternoon date with Nigeria.
The game between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea is the first AFCON game for the two countries in Ivory Coast.
With the new development from Nigeria’s popular cable airliner, Multichoice —who earned a late minute broadcasting rights for the tournament— the match will now be available on Supersport on DSTV/GoTV, and also on Startimes, Afrosports, and free-to-air cables.
Kick-off for the game will be 3:00PM Nigerian time.
