Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed delight at surpassing Mikel Obi’s record for the most minutes played by a Nigerian in the English Premier League.

The 28-year-old midfielder achieved this feat by surpassing 16,289 minutes played during Fulham’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle, overtaking the record previously held by Super Eagles legend Mikel, who accumulated his minutes while playing for Chelsea from 2006 to 2017.

Iwobi has had a commendable season with the Cottagers, scoring five goals and providing two assists in 30 appearances.

In an interview with Kiss Fresh, Iwobi shared his excitement about breaking the record set by his ‘idol.’

“Surpassing Mikel Obi to become the Nigerian player with the most minutes played in the Premier League is crazy. He’s a legend.”

“I’m trying to increase that, keep going, and whoever is going to come for that title has got to put in hard work.”

“That’s a big achievement because John Obi-Mikel is a legend in the game. The fact that I’ve played with him makes me feel old. He was actually my idol at one point,” he concluded.
