Argentina fans push ‘crazy’ conspiracy theory over Messi team talk after World Cup final loss to Spain

Spain’s World Cup triumph over Argentina has been followed by a wave of online conspiracy theories – with some Argentine fans claiming a calm pre-match team talk by Lionel Messi was a sign something “unnatural” was affecting the players.

Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 World Cup final, securing the title after a performance widely viewed in Spain as tactically and technically dominant, even if the scoreline remained narrow.

But Spanish sports daily Mundo Deportivo reports that a section of supporters in Argentina have turned to social media to seek explanations beyond the pitch for their team’s subdued display.

Messi’s dressing-room message under the microscope

According to Mundo Deportivo, a short video clip shared widely on X (formerly Twitter) shows Messi addressing his Argentina team-mates in the dressing room shortly before they walked out for the final.

In the footage, Messi is seen trying to calm the squad, saying: “هيا يا شباب، الهدوء، اهم شيء ان نكون هاديين، نفكر في اللعب فقط، وننسى كل شيء اخر، نفكر في جماهيرنا، ونفكر في اللعب”.

The report says some Argentine fans seized on both Messi’s words and the apparently muted body language of the players around him, suggesting the atmosphere felt too calm for a World Cup final.

They argued that what they saw as a lack of visible passion or intensity might indicate the team had gone into the game “restricted” or influenced by some unknown factor.

Mundo Deportivo openly mocked these interpretations, branding them a “crazy conspiracy theory” and dismissing the idea that anything mysterious was at play.

The paper suggested that, rather than accepting Spain’s superiority on the day, some voices in Argentina were searching for “obscure” explanations to rationalise the defeat and the underwhelming performance from the world champions.

Spain, it noted, had imposed clear tactical and technical control for long stretches of the final, limiting Argentina’s threat and dictating the rhythm of the game, even though they did not translate that dominance into a more emphatic scoreline.

Calm words turned into ‘evidence’

Mundo Deportivo stressed that Messi’s message had an obvious and conventional purpose: to steady his team-mates’ nerves and refocus them on their tasks on the pitch.

His call for calm and concentration, aimed at shutting out external pressure and thinking only of the match and the supporters, is consistent with standard pre-match leadership from an experienced captain.

However, the newspaper reported that some Argentine fans chose to reinterpret those same words as supposed “evidence” that the players were not entering the final with full freedom or full mental clarity.

What began as a motivational attempt by Messi to ease tension, it said, has been reframed in certain online spaces as the cornerstone of an elaborate theory to explain why Argentina failed to match Spain’s level in the showpiece match.

Online frustration after title slips away

The reaction illustrates the depth of disappointment among Argentina supporters after watching their team lose a World Cup final in which expectations had been sky high.

Instead of focusing solely on Spain’s performance, a portion of the debate has shifted towards speculative narratives about dressing-room mood and unseen influences.

For Mundo Deportivo, such claims are merely a reflection of the refusal by some fans to acknowledge that, on the night, Spain were simply the better side.
