Argentina players find Jordan Pickford’s penalty notes on water bottle after World Cup semi-final win

Argentina’s World Cup semi-final celebrations took an unexpected twist when players discovered a water bottle belonging to England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford – complete with a sticker of detailed notes on their preferred penalty locations.

The incident unfolded on the pitch in Atlanta shortly after Argentina’s 2-1 victory over England in the 2026 World Cup semi-final, a result that booked Lionel Messi’s side a place in the final against Spain.

As the Argentina squad remained on the field to celebrate with their fans, attention quickly shifted from the singing in the stands to the discovery on the turf.

Massage therapist’s find sparks curiosity

According to Argentine broadcaster TyC Sports, national team massage therapist Marcelo “Daddy” De Andrea found Pickford’s water bottle, which had a small sheet of paper attached to it.

The paper contained specific instructions on where Argentina’s key players tend to aim their spot-kicks – information designed to guide the England No 1 in the event the match was decided by a penalty shootout.

Those plans were rendered unnecessary when Argentina edged the contest in normal time, but television cameras then captured the moment the notes became a post-match talking point.

De Andrea was seen showing the bottle and its sticker to captain Lionel Messi, alongside Nicolas Gonzalez and Marcos Senesi. The trio tried to decipher the English goalkeeper’s observations, leaning in to read the writing and discussing the details in a brief, animated exchange.

Enzo Fernandez spots his name and bursts out laughing

The light-hearted scene escalated when midfielder Enzo Fernandez joined the group. Broadcast images showed Fernandez quickly recognising his own name among the listed takers, before bursting into laughter.

He jokingly gave De Andrea a playful punch on the arm, then pointed to the sky – a gesture interpreted as a sign of relief that the match had not gone to penalties, where Pickford’s research might have come into play.

The clip circulated rapidly on social media, prompting debate among supporters over how accurate Pickford’s data might have been and whether it would have helped him stop Argentina’s penalties under shootout pressure.

Backroom staff share full details of Pickford’s plan

Hours after the final whistle, Argentina’s fitness coach Luis Martin posted a clear image of Pickford’s note on his social media accounts, revealing the full list of instructions the England goalkeeper had been relying on.

The sheet appeared to map out each likely Argentine penalty taker and their favoured shooting zones, part of increasingly sophisticated preparation work goalkeepers now undertake ahead of major tournament knockouts.

Its publication added another layer of intrigue to a match already marked by tension and flashpoints between the two sides.

Heated contest adds edge to post-match moment

The semi-final had been played in a charged atmosphere, with several confrontations involving Pickford and Argentina players during the 90 minutes.

The England goalkeeper was at the centre of controversy when he celebrated Anthony Gordon’s goal in demonstrative fashion, an act some Argentines interpreted as provocative.

Later in the match, after Enzo Fernandez scored Argentina’s equaliser, defender Cristian Romero sprinted towards Pickford and celebrated directly in front of him, in one of the game’s most fiery moments.

Against that backdrop, the discovery of Pickford’s personalised penalty dossier – and the Argentine players’ amused reaction to it – provided a striking coda to a dramatic encounter.

Argentina will now turn their focus to the final against Spain, while England and Pickford are left to reflect not only on a narrow defeat, but on the preparation for a penalty shootout that never was.
