Atletico Madrid chief vows Julian Alvarez will not be sold ‘for €200m’ amid Barcelona interest

Atletico Madrid have drawn a firm line under mounting speculation over Julian Alvarez’s future, with the club’s chief executive insisting the Argentine forward will not be sold – even if an offer of €200m arrives.

Miguel Angel Gil Marin delivered an unambiguous message aimed squarely at Barcelona president Joan Laporta and his board, after growing reports that Alvarez wants to move to the Camp Nou.

“We do not want to sell Julian Alvarez,” Gil Marin told Spanish newspaper Marca.

In one of the strongest public statements yet from Atletico’s hierarchy, Gil Marin made clear that no financial package would tempt the Madrid club into negotiations.

He added: “We will not accept an offer of €100m, and we will not accept an offer of €150m or even €200m.”

The emphatic comments are designed to shut down an increasingly heated transfer saga in Spain, where Barcelona have been closely linked with a move for the 24-year-old World Cup winner.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested Alvarez has indicated a desire to join Barcelona, encouraging the Catalan club to test Atletico’s resolve during the current transfer window.

Sub-headline: Atletico close the door on Barcelona
Despite that reported interest from the player and Barca’s search for attacking reinforcements, Atletico are standing firm. The club, known as Los Rojiblancos, consider Alvarez a non-negotiable part of their plans under long-serving coach Diego Simeone.

Atletico are determined “not to enter into any negotiations regarding his sale, regardless of the value of the offers submitted”, according to the stance set out around Gil Marin’s remarks.

The Madrid side believe keeping Alvarez is crucial to their sporting project as they attempt to close the gap on La Liga rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona in the coming season.

Gil Marin’s intervention is also seen as an attempt to bring clarity to a situation that has threatened to overshadow Atletico’s preparations for the new campaign, with constant questions over whether Barcelona would make a formal bid.

Sub-headline: Transfer window message to all suitors
The statement effectively shuts the door not only on Barcelona but on any other European club considering a blockbuster move for the Argentine during the current transfer period.

By publicly ruling out a sale at figures far beyond typical La Liga transfers, Atletico are signalling both their financial stability and their determination to build around Alvarez in the long term, rather than cashing in on one of their most valuable assets.

The player is described by the club as an “essential part” of Simeone’s project, reflecting his importance in attack and his perceived role in the squad’s evolution.

With Gil Marin’s declaration, Atletico Madrid have attempted to end the speculation decisively, making clear that, at least for this transfer window, Julian Alvarez is off the market.
