Benzema future in doubt as stand-off with Al Hilal and Inzaghi deepens

Karim Benzema’s future at Al Hilal has become one of the most complicated issues of the Saudi club’s summer, with relations between the French striker, the hierarchy and head coach Simone Inzaghi described as close to deadlocked ahead of the transfer deadline.

Although Benzema has not consistently delivered the level expected since joining Al Hilal, the current dispute goes beyond questions over form. People close to the situation say the 36-year-old feels underappreciated and believes his status in the game has not been fully recognised inside the club.

A particular source of tension has been the handling of the captaincy. Reports indicate Benzema has been unhappy with the continued use of seniority as the main factor in deciding who wears the armband. The former Real Madrid forward is understood to feel that his career achievements and profile justify a more prominent leadership role, especially when compared with the influence Cristiano Ronaldo has been granted at Al Nassr.

Tactical rift with Inzaghi

Inzaghi is said to view Benzema in strictly positional terms, wanting him to operate primarily inside the penalty area and focus on finishing moves. That is at odds with how Benzema has played for much of his career at Real Madrid, where he frequently dropped into midfield, roamed across the frontline, created chances and was heavily involved in the build-up.

This clash of footballing philosophies has widened the gap between player and coach. According to reports, relations have deteriorated to the point where the situation now resembles a stalemate, one that will be difficult to resolve unless one side is prepared to compromise.

Against this backdrop, Benzema has instructed his agent to sound out potential moves abroad in preparation for a possible exit. That step is seen as a clear signal that the striker is willing to cut short his time at Al Hilal if an appealing sporting project can be found.

Club open to sale – at a price

On the other side of the stand-off, Al Hilal’s management are not believed to be insisting on keeping Benzema at all costs. However, they have made it clear that any departure would be contingent on receiving a financially acceptable offer that protects the club’s interests. No such proposal has yet arrived.

That leaves the club facing a strategic question: whether they should soften their position in order to retain Benzema, or continue to hold out for the right bid and risk losing him if it materialises.

From a purely footballing perspective, Al Hilal are considered to have several attacking options already in the squad. The board has for some time been working on reshaping the group of foreign players to fit Inzaghi’s plans, meaning Benzema’s continued presence is not viewed internally as an untouchable priority if it clashes with the Italian’s long-term project.

High risk if Benzema leaves unreplaceed

There is, however, recognition that allowing Benzema to leave without signing a replacement of comparable calibre would be a significant gamble. Al Hilal are heading into a demanding campaign in which they intend to compete for every domestic and continental trophy available.

For now, all scenarios remain on the table. Benzema is sticking firmly to his stance over his role and status, Inzaghi is holding to his tactical ideas, and the club’s leadership are waiting for an offer they deem suitable.

Caught between these three positions, Al Hilal face a pivotal decision that could define the direction of their project for the coming season. Either the board manage to bring the parties closer together and draw a line under the dispute, or the impasse drags on and ends with the departure of one of the biggest names the club has signed in recent years.
