Borussia Dortmund has officially announced the signing of Carney Chukwuemeka on loan from Chelsea for the remainder of the 2024/25 season, with the option for a permanent transfer.
The 21-year-old midfielder, born in Austria to Nigerian parents and raised in Northampton, England, joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022 for £20 million.
However, Chukwuemeka has struggled to secure regular playing time at Stamford Bridge, making just 32 appearances and scoring two goals since his arrival.
This season, the English midfielder has made five appearances for Chelsea, with his most recent outing being in their UEFA Conference League win over Astana.
Chukwuemeka had been linked with several clubs across Europe, with notable interest from Italy, but it was Dortmund who acted swiftly to secure his services.
The German club has built a reputation for nurturing young English talent, with previous successes from players like Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham.
“Carney is an extremely talented box-to-box player who caused a sensation in the Premier League at a young age,” said Dortmund’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, speaking to the club’s website.
“Despite the lack of rhythm, we see a great opportunity in this situation and hope that Carney will regain his former strength with us.”
Chukwuemeka is set to train with his new Dortmund teammates on Tuesday and will be hoping to make his debut when the team resumes Bundesliga action on Saturday against Stuttgart.
