Como’s nine-goal record and Fenerbahce comeback headline Champions League drama

Como equalled the modern UEFA Champions League record for goals in a match with a remarkable 9-1 victory over Lens, while Fenerbahce ended Liverpool’s perfect start with a 3-2 comeback win on a dramatic night of Matchday 4 action.

Cesc Fabregas’ side also set a new record for the competition’s biggest away victory at Stade Bollaert-Delelis. Anastasios Douvikas scored a hat-trick in Como’s first European campaign, with further goals from Nico Paz, Lucas da Cunha, Marc-Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina and 18-year-old debutant Matteo Papaccioli.

Ruben Aguilar scored Lens’ only goal. Como’s total matches Bayern Munich’s nine-goal haul against Dinamo Zagreb in 2024, while the eight-goal winning margin is level with Liverpool’s 8-0 victory over Besiktas in 2007 and Real Madrid’s 8-0 win against Malmo in 2015. Como have now scored 19 goals in four league-phase matches.

Real Madrid preserved their perfect record by recovering to beat AEK Athens 3-2. Aboubakary Koita gave the Greek side the lead before Jude Bellingham levelled. Stavros Pilios restored AEK’s advantage, but Kylian Mbappe equalised late and Federico Valverde completed the comeback with a stoppage-time strike.

Liverpool’s unbeaten start came to an end in Istanbul, where Fenerbahce overturned two leads to win 3-2. Trey Nyoni and Alexander Isak put the visitors ahead, but Mason Greenwood, Archie Brown and Vedat Muriqi scored for the Turkish club to secure a notable victory.

Manchester City also survived a close contest, winning 3-2 at RB Leipzig. Castello Lukeba’s own goal and an Enzo Fernandez strike gave City the lead on two occasions, only for Ridle Baku and Antonio Nusa to bring Leipzig level. Erling Haaland settled the match in the 78th minute, maintaining his strong record against the German side.

Porto recorded one of the evening’s most convincing results by beating Napoli 4-1 at the Estadio do Dragao. Jan Bednarek, Gabri Veiga, Jakub Kiwior and Samu Aghehowa, from the penalty spot, scored for the hosts, while Scott McTominay replied for Napoli.

Borussia Dortmund defeated Real Betis 2-1 at home. Aitor Ruibal put the visitors level after Fabio Silva’s opener, before Konstantinos Karetsas scored the winner.

Arsenal earned a 2-1 win away to Slavia Prague, with Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres scoring in the first half. Nowak’s late goal was only a consolation.

Club Brugge beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1 through goals from Nicolo Tresoldi and Carlos Forbs, either side of Keito Sano’s equaliser. Viking completed the night’s results with a comfortable 4-1 home victory over Sabah.

The results combined record scoring, late winners and a major upset as the 2026/27 Champions League league phase continued.
