Galatasaray Boss Okan Buruk Wants Osimhen in Club’s New Leadership Group

Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk has revealed that he wants Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen to become one of the club’s new captains, highlighting the Nigerian’s growing influence both on and off the pitch following another impressive campaign in Türkiye.

Osimhen has quickly established himself as one of Galatasaray’s most important players since completing a permanent transfer to the Turkish champions, helping the Istanbul giants successfully defend their Super Lig title with a string of match-winning performances.

The Nigeria international enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 season, scoring 22 goals and providing eight assists in 33 appearances across all competitions, further strengthening his reputation as one of Europe’s most complete centre-forwards.

Beyond his goals, Osimhen’s work ethic, commitment and leadership qualities have earned widespread admiration from teammates, coaching staff and supporters alike, prompting Buruk to consider him for a more prominent leadership role within the squad.

With legendary goalkeeper Fernando Muslera no longer leading the dressing room and Mauro Icardi having departed, Galatasaray are reshaping their leadership structure ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Speaking about the transition, Buruk admitted replacing Muslera’s influence would not be straightforward but believes Osimhen possesses the character needed to help lead the next generation of the squad.

“It was tough for us after Muslera. He had a strong hold over the locker room,” Buruk said in comments relayed by Le Marca Sports.

“We want to give responsibility to Victor Osimhen. It will be important for him to be among the new captains we choose.”

The comments underline the immense trust Buruk has placed in the Super Eagles star, whose impact has extended far beyond his goalscoring exploits since arriving in Istanbul.

Osimhen’s relentless style of play, leadership by example and close relationship with the Galatasaray supporters have made him one of the club’s most influential figures in a short period, with many fans already viewing him as one of the faces of the team.

Should Buruk follow through on his plans, the former Lille and Napoli striker would take on an even greater responsibility as Galatasaray prepare to defend their domestic crown while competing in Europe next season.

For Osimhen, the potential appointment as one of Galatasaray’s captains would represent another significant milestone in a career that has seen him develop into one of Nigeria’s foremost football ambassadors and one of the leading figures in Turkish football.
