Ibrahim Gusau: NFF President lauds Super Eagles’ Unity Cup performance

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has conveyed his contentment with the Super Eagles’ display at the recently held Unity Cup in London.

He characterized the performance as a crucial step in the effort to reconstruct a strong national team under the guidance of new head coach Eric Chelle.

While speaking on the sidelines of the tournament, Gusau mentioned that the event had fulfilled its primary goal — providing the newly appointed coach with an opportunity to evaluate new talent and start shaping the future of the national team.

“First of all, that’s the essence of this type of tournament,” Gusau stated. “It took us several months to organize this, and it was designed to give the coach a chance to observe some new players. As you know, he was appointed less than a month prior to the World Cup qualifiers, so he had limited options and had to work with the players available to him.”

The Unity Cup, which included four teams playing two matches each in London, enabled Coach Chelle to experiment with new players and strategies. According to the NFF President, the matches offered a clearer understanding of the potential within the squad.

“With what we observed in these two matches, we are pleased and optimistic. We saw promise,” Gusau commented. “I believe every football-loving Nigerian witnessed what transpired in London. It provided us with a glimpse of the dedication the coach is investing in building a Super Eagles team we can depend on.”

He assured that the NFF will continue to extend full support to the coach, highlighting the significance of patience and ongoing development.

“By the grace of God, we’ll provide him with all the assistance he requires to reach his objectives. The essential point is that we’ve accomplished the primary aim of participating in this type of tournament.”

Gusau also confirmed that the Super Eagles will head to Russia for another Grade A international friendly, which he believes will provide further insights into the emerging players.

“As I mentioned earlier, we are thrilled. We’ll do everything necessary to support the coach and ensure that the team progresses.”
