Inter Milan slip up once again in shock Bologna defeat

Inter Milan suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Bologna on Wednesday night to put AC Milan in pole position in the Serie A title run-in.

Inter Milan came into the match knowing winning their match in hand would inch them a step closer to defending their crown, and they seemed to be on their way to an easy victory at a struggling Bologna.

The defending champions got off to a perfect start thanks to Ivan Perišić’s superb individual effort.

The Croat drove to the edge of the box with a near-perfect run before finishing exquisitely from the edge of the box with a left foot for his sixth goal of the season.

Lautaro Martinez squandered two glorious chances to give Inter Milan a healthy lead, allowing the hosts, who had won only two of their last nine home games, to come back into the match.

Inter were soon left to rue their chances as the hosts pulled level midway through the half when Marko Arnautović met Musa Barrow’s inviting cross into the area, and brilliantly guided the ball into the net.

The teams seemed to be headed for a draw until disaster struck for Simone Inzaghi’s side with nine minutes to go.

An incredible howler from reserve goalkeeper Ionut Radu allowed the hosts to score what proved the winner.

Radu, making his first appearance of the season, tried to pass out a throw-ball, but instead hooked it towards his own net, allowing Nicola Sansone to tap in from close range.

“It was an unfortunate mistake, but these things happen,” Inter coach Simone Inzaghi said.

“Radu is an excellent goalkeeper with a bright future ahead of him.”

“We’ve got to keep our heads. We’ve had a tough blow but you saw how Bologna played today, every game is going to be difficult and two points is a gap that we can make up,” added Inzaghi.

The loss means AC Milan hold a two-point advantage going into the last four matches of the season.
