Jose Peseiro linked with Super Eagles return After Mamelodi Sundowns interest

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The former head coach of Nigeria senior men’s national team Jose Peseiro is rumoured to return to his duty with the Super Eagles.

The Portuguese gaffer guided the three time African champions to a second place finish at 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote D’Ivoire where the team lost to the host country in the final match.

He had since left his position after the tournament with the expiration of his contract.

His assistant, Finidi George replaced him and played two Word Cup Qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic picking a point from the two games before his resignation which the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to confirm.

George had since joined Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, Rivers United leaving the national team job vacant.

According to Gerald Baloyi of local agency, Vodia Sports International Management, Peseiro has been offered to South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Mamelodi Sundowns.

“Yes Vodia Sports International Management offered Jose Peseiro to Sundowns though the Nigeria national team are interested in bringing him to take over again,” Baloyi told KickOff.

Before the AFCON, Peseiro played out 1-1 draws with Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

The team has three points from four games putting the West Africa side in a dicey position ahead of their next two games in March 2025.

It now behooves on the NFF to name a new head coach for the team ahead of their next games especially the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers where they will face Rwanda, Benin Republic, and Libya in Group D.
