Jude Nwankwo seals switch to Unirea Tasnad as Nigerian defender moves on free

Nigerian centre-back Jude Nwankwo has joined Romanian side Unirea Tasnad on a free transfer from Gheorghe Doja. The 24-year-old completes the move within Romania as Unirea look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new campaign.

Nwankwo, who is primarily deployed in the heart of defence, leaves Gheorghe Doja after his stint with the club in the Romanian system to take up a new challenge with Unirea. The transfer was finalised on 27 July 2026, with the player moving as a free agent.

The addition of Nwankwo gives Unirea Tasnad another specialist central defender in their squad, adding height and physical presence at the back. His experience in Romanian football with Gheorghe Doja is expected to ease his adaptation to the set-up and style at his new club.

Nwankwo’s arrival continues a trend of clubs at this level looking to recruit players already familiar with the domestic game rather than relying solely on new imports. The move also offers the Nigerian the opportunity to consolidate his career in Europe and establish himself in another Romanian team.

By securing Nwankwo on a free transfer, Unirea Tasnad have completed a low-cost deal to reinforce a key area of the pitch.
