Kalilou Traore: Former Wydad and Mali midfielder dies in car accident aged 38

Former Wydad Athletic Club midfielder Kalilou Traore, who won 17 caps for Mali, has died at the age of 38 following a car accident, sending shockwaves through the Moroccan club and its supporters.

French side Sochaux announced the death of their former player, expressing “deep sadness” at the news and offering condolences to Traore’s family and loved ones. The Malian international played for the Ligue 1 club between 2012 and 2014.

Traore made 11 league appearances for Sochaux before bringing an early end to his professional career in 2014, when he was just 26.

Career across Africa and Europe

Born in Mali, Traore represented several clubs across Africa and Europe during his playing days.

He began his career in his homeland with Real Bamako, before moving to Morocco, where he featured for Wydad Athletic Club and Hassania Agadir.

Traore then continued his journey in European football with Croatian side Istra and Danish club Odense, adding further experience in different leagues before deciding to retire from the professional game at a relatively young age.

International impact with Mali

On the international stage, Traore made 17 appearances for the Mali national team.

He was part of the squad that secured a bronze medal at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, one of the notable achievements of his international career and a significant moment for Malian football.
