Lookman scores twice as Atletico ease past Getafe in pre-season win

Ademola Lookman struck twice in the first half as Atletico Madrid recorded a convincing 4-1 pre-season victory over La Liga rivals Getafe on Wednesday evening.
The Super Eagles forward, who joined Diego Simeone’s side during the winter transfer window, delivered a decisive performance that put Atletico in command long before full-time as preparations continue for the 2026-27 campaign.
Lookman needed only five minutes to make his mark, reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the box and driving home a close-range rebound to give Atletico an early lead.
He then doubled his tally on 35 minutes, capping a well-constructed attacking move by calmly slotting past goalkeeper David Soria to put Simeone’s team 2-0 up.
Getafe reduced the deficit shortly before the interval, with Alvaro Gutierrez finding the net five minutes before half-time to send his side into the break trailing by a single goal.
Atletico reassert control after the break
After half-time, Atletico Madrid restored their grip on the contest, limiting Getafe’s threat while adding further goals to underline their superiority.
Arnau Ortiz extended Atletico’s advantage in the second period, restoring the two-goal cushion and shifting the momentum firmly back in favour of the home side.
Obed Vargas later added a fourth, sealing a comfortable win and rounding off an encouraging evening for Simeone’s team against top-flight opposition.
Encouraging signs for Lookman at Wanda Metropolitano
Lookman’s double continues what has been an impressive start to life at the Wanda Metropolitano following his move from Atalanta.
The Nigerian international’s sharp movement and clinical finishing offered further evidence that he is adjusting well to Simeone’s demands and adapting to Atletico’s attacking structure.
With the new season drawing closer, Lookman will be aiming to build on this performance, maintain his form in the remaining warm-up matches and establish himself as a central figure in Atletico Madrid’s forward line.
