Miana questions Mbappe’s Ballon d’Or case ahead of 2026 award

Spanish journalist Anton Meana has challenged Kylian Mbappe’s claims to the 2026 Ballon d’Or, arguing that the Real Madrid forward’s public presentation of his season does not match his performances on the pitch.

The identity of this year’s winner will be announced in a few days, with Mbappe, Lamine Yamal and Harry Kane regarded as the leading contenders for football’s most prestigious individual prize.

Mbappe has conducted an extensive media campaign in the hope of winning the Ballon d’Or for the first time in his career. However, Meana believes Bayern Munich striker Kane has a stronger case, pointing to his greater goalscoring return, performances in major matches and the titles he won in Germany.

“Kane was better than him in every aspect; he scored more goals, knocked him out of the Champions League and beat him at the World Cup, as well as winning titles in Germany,” Meana said.

His comments were made during an appearance on the Spanish radio programme El Larguero, broadcast by Cadena SER, and were reported by French website Foot Mercato.

Meana also criticised the way Mbappe’s campaign has been portrayed to supporters, suggesting the narrative around the Real Madrid player’s season has overstated what he delivered.

“He made his message suggest that he had produced a much better season than he actually did,” Meana added.

The remarks have placed renewed focus on Mbappe’s credentials ahead of Monday’s announcement. The France international is competing with Yamal and Kane as debate continues over the criteria that should determine the Ballon d’Or winner.

Kane’s case, according to Meana, is based not only on his individual statistics but also on his contribution in decisive fixtures and his success in German football. Mbappe’s supporters, meanwhile, have sought to build momentum around his season through a sustained media campaign.

The Ballon d’Or debate is therefore centred on whether the award should prioritise goalscoring numbers, performances in major games, success in Europe and international football, or the number of trophies won.

With the ceremony approaching, Meana’s assessment represents a direct challenge to the argument that Mbappe should be considered the leading candidate. The final decision will be revealed on Monday, when the competition between Yamal, Kane and Mbappe reaches its conclusion.
