Mohamed Salah storm at Besiktas sparks confusion as vice-president denies resignation

Besiktas have been plunged into turmoil after the club formally announced the resignation of board member Faisal Ahmet Caglar – only for him to reject the claim within minutes and threaten legal action.
In a statement filed to Turkey’s Public Disclosure Platform (KAP), Besiktas Futbol Yatirimlari Sanayi ve Ticaret AS said Caglar had stepped down from his role on the board with effect from 23 July 2026.
“Mr Faisal Ahmet Caglar, a member of the board of directors of our company, has resigned from his position as a member of the board of directors as of 23 July 2026,” the disclosure read.
However, Turkish reports say the announcement comes just days after a major controversy involving Caglar and a social media post on the club’s official channels about Egypt forward Mohamed Salah, which is understood to have caused internal uproar.
Local media claim the message concerning Salah pushed Besiktas into the global spotlight for the wrong reasons, as it was seen by senior figures at the club as an unprofessional move that prompted an increase in the financial demands from the Liverpool star’s agent.
Salah has been heavily linked with moves away from Liverpool in recent transfer windows, and any suggestion of Besiktas involvement created significant media attention in Turkey and beyond. The club hierarchy are reported to have been angered by the way the situation was handled on their official platforms.
Caglar at odds with club statement

The situation escalated dramatically when Caglar responded publicly after the stock-exchange statement, flatly denying he had resigned from his position at Besiktas.
He insisted he had not submitted any resignation, described the club’s announcement as inaccurate, and made clear he intends to challenge it through the courts.
Caglar said he would take “all necessary legal steps” to defend his rights, signalling the start of what could become an extended and highly public dispute between a senior figure and the club he serves.
His rebuttal has cast serious doubt over the club’s official version of events and raised questions over governance and internal communication at one of Turkey’s most prominent sides.
Fans split amid uncertainty
The episode has left Besiktas supporters divided and unsure whom to believe, with one side presented with an official filing that confirms the departure of a powerful boardroom figure and the other hearing a categorical denial from Caglar himself.
Among the “Black and White” fanbase, the saga has sparked intense debate on social media and in local media outlets, with some backing the club’s formal communication and others siding with Caglar’s account.
What began as a row over a high-profile post involving Salah has now turned into an open power struggle that may ultimately be settled in court, rather than behind closed doors at the club’s headquarters.
As matters stand, Besiktas find themselves at the centre of an unfolding boardroom crisis, with the status of one of their key decision-makers officially recorded as resigned – and simultaneously rejected by the man concerned.
