Bayer Leverkusen’s Nathan Tella has spoken about the challenges Bayern Munich presented during their DFB-Pokal clash, despite the Bundesliga leaders being reduced to 10 men early in the match.
Tella scored the only goal of the game in the 69th minute, heading home a brilliant cross from Alex Grimaldo to seal a 1-0 victory and send Leverkusen into the quarterfinals of the German Cup.
Bayern’s veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was sent off in the 17th minute after a collision with Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong, leaving the hosts a man down for the remainder of the match.
Despite the numerical advantage, Tella, who was brought on in the 61st minute, emphasized the tough nature of the contest.
“It was a tough game, even with their red card. We had to stay mature and not get overly excited or rush to kill off the game,” Tella said on the club’s official website.
“They still created chances, but we stayed composed, and I’m glad I could help secure the win.”
The Super Eagles winger also expressed excitement for the upcoming round, noting Leverkusen’s strong form.
“We’re excited for the next round. We won this competition last year, and it’s ours to lose. We’ll stay motivated, focus on the next game, and keep building on this momentum.”
Leverkusen, under Xabi Alonso, have won four consecutive games across three competitions since returning from the international break.
