Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool: Naby Keita sends the Reds to the top of the table

Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 victory against Newcastle at St. James’ Park thanks to a first-half goal from Naby Keita.

With Manchester City scheduled to play Leeds later on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp’s side took full advantage to halt the Magpies’ run of five consecutive home triumphs.

James Milner’s superb tackle created up the opportunity, before Keita received Diogo Jota’s ball and rounded Martin Dubravka for a priceless goal.

In contrast to Wednesday’s straightforward 2-0 triumph against Villarreal in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, Liverpool were forced to sweat as the Magpies had two goals disallowed for offside.

Nonetheless, the much-changed Reds dominated their opponents and could have won by a greater margin, sending a message to championship contenders City ahead of their home game against Leeds later today.

Pep Guardiola’s team will go to Elland Road two points behind Liverpool and will need to defeat the Whites in order to reclaim top spot in the Premier League.
