Newcastle United scout Valencia winger David Otorbi during Racing Santander draw

Newcastle United have intensified their interest in Valencia winger David Otorbi after sending representatives to watch the 18-year-old in action against Racing Santander.

The Premier League club are monitoring the Spanish-Nigerian prospect as they consider a possible move, with Otorbi continuing to attract attention through his performances in Spain.

Spanish outlet Marca reports that two Newcastle representatives attended the Campos de Sport de El Sardinero on Sunday to assess the teenager during Valencia’s 2-2 draw with Racing Santander.

Otorbi began the match on the bench but made an immediate impression after being introduced in the second half. His pace, direct running and willingness to attack defenders were among the qualities that have established him as one of Valencia’s most highly regarded young players.

The winger scored Valencia’s equaliser after receiving an assist from Javi Guerra, bringing his side level and demonstrating his ability to affect the game after coming on.

He also came close to creating a winning moment late on. After beating his marker, Otorbi cut the ball back for Hugo Duro, but the chance was not converted and Valencia were denied a potential late winner.

According to the report, Newcastle’s scouts were also impressed by Otorbi’s movement and confidence, as well as his readiness to take on opponents. His performance reinforced the qualities that have placed him on the club’s radar.

Despite Newcastle United’s interest, Valencia are in a strong position to resist approaches for the dual-national attacker during the upcoming transfer window.

Otorbi signed a new contract with Valencia in April, and the agreement runs until June 2028. The deal also contains a unilateral option allowing the Spanish club to extend his stay by a further three seasons.

That contract arrangement gives Valencia significant protection as they seek to retain one of their promising young players in the face of interest from potential suitors.
