NPFL: Mbwas Magnut explains Plateau United’s struggles in difficult season

By Wale Mustapha
Plateau United head coach Mbwas Magnut has attributed the club’s underwhelming performance in the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season to off-field issues, a slow start, and internal challenges.
The Peace Boys endured a turbulent campaign that saw them flirt with relegation and exit the President Federation Cup at the quarterfinal stage.
Their NPFL status was only secured on Matchday 37 following a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Lobi Stars in Jos.
With 51 points from 37 matches, Plateau United are now safe heading into their final fixture against Enyimba FC in Aba on Sunday.
Reflecting on the season, Magnut acknowledged the difficulties his team faced but praised the players for their resilience and commitment.
“It wasn’t a pleasant start to the season for us, but I thank God we were able to pull through,” he said. “The players showed a lot of commitment.
“They fought bravely, even when we were counted out. They demonstrated resilience, determination, and a strong will to succeed.”
Magnut also pointed to specific setbacks that impacted the team’s campaign, including a three-point deduction stemming from an incident after their home game against Rangers, as well as a surprise home loss to Niger Tornadoes.
“All of this put us in a tight situation. I’m glad we managed to overcome it,” he added.
Despite a difficult season, Plateau United will remain in the top flight next term and are expected to regroup during the offseason.
