Oriola Sunday: Nigerian striker joins Sydney FC from RB Omiya on loan
Nigerian centre-forward Oriola Sunday has joined Sydney FC from Japan’s RB Omiya on loan, with the move taking the 23-year-old into the A-League Men for the 2026-27 season.
Sunday’s transfer was completed on 16 August 2026, and the loan is scheduled to run until 30 June 2027. He will return to RB Omiya when the arrangement ends.
The striker arrives in Australia after beginning the current campaign with RB Omiya in Japan’s J2 League. He had not made an appearance in the competition before completing his move to Sydney, following two possible matches at the start of the season.
Sunday joined RB Omiya from Tokushima Vort. in July 2024. During his time with Omiya, he was part of the side that won the Japanese third tier championship in the 2023-24 season.
The switch to Sydney is the latest move in a career that has included spells with several Japanese clubs. Before joining Tokushima Vort., Sunday spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Vanr. Hachinohe, having previously moved to Tokushima from F’chiyama Seibi on a free transfer in February 2022.
Born on 18 April 2003, Sunday stands 1.78 metres tall and plays as a centre-forward. He is right-footed and holds Nigerian nationality.
His arrival gives Sydney a forward who has spent his senior career in Japan, with the temporary move providing a change of league and country. The deal also gives RB Omiya a defined return point, with Sunday’s registration due to revert to the Japanese club at the end of the loan period.
Sunday’s transfer follows his progression through Japanese football since joining F’chiyama Seibi from IBS Dreams FC in 2019. He later moved to Tokushima Vort. before taking a loan route to Vanr. Hachinohe, then returning to Tokushima and moving permanently to RB Omiya in 2024.
The Nigerian striker is now contracted to Sydney FC on loan through 30 June 2027, completing his move from RB Omiya to the A-League Men.
