Reading Chronicle, a prominent local weekly newspaper, has cast a critical eye on Nigeria forward Sone Aluko’s performance throughout the recently concluded English Championship season. In their player assessments, each key player was scrutinized and scored out of 10, with Aluko receiving a modest rating of four.
The publication described Aluko, 29, as “a shadow of the player who played against Reading for Fulham last season.” The assessment emphasized that too many games seemed to pass him by, highlighting only a few notable moments, such as his solo goal against QPR and a commendable performance away at Derby County.
Despite the occasional bright spots, the report suggested that Aluko failed to live up to the expectations associated with his club-record price tag. The Nigerian forward made 39 league appearances for Reading, finding the net three times, since joining from Fulham in August 2017.
Reading successfully avoided relegation to League One, finishing 20th in the final league table with 44 points, securing a three-point buffer above the drop zone in the 24-team competition.
