Spain’s World Cup glory sealed by extra-time winner as emotional Morata–Yamal embrace captures ‘family’ spirit

Spain’s dramatic World Cup final victory over Argentina in 2026 was followed by an emotional moment on the pitch, as former captain Alvaro Morata shared a long embrace with teenage star Lamine Yamal – a gesture widely seen as symbolising a generational handover in La Roja’s new golden era.

Ferran Torres’s goal in the 106th minute of extra time at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium secured Spain a 1-0 win and their second World Cup title, sparking wild celebrations among players, staff and fans.

But amid the chaos of jubilation, television cameras picked out a quieter, poignant scene: Morata, the Euro 2024-winning captain who was not part of the 2026 squad, holding Yamal tightly for several seconds on the turf, both visibly moved by the scale of Spain’s achievement.

Morata flies in to witness Spain’s second star

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Morata was determined not to miss the final that could – and ultimately did – deliver Spain their second star on the national team shirt.

The striker, now playing for Italian side Como, travelled to New York to watch the match in person. He was accompanied by other internationals who were also absent from the tournament squad, including midfielder Fermin Lopez.

Spain’s breakthrough finally came deep into extra time, when Torres struck in the 106th minute. As the final whistle blew and celebrations spilled onto the pitch, current and former players converged in a moving show of unity.

It was in those minutes that Morata, who has previously represented both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, sought out Barcelona’s Yamal, now one of the symbols of Spain’s present and future.

A hug that spoke of ‘family’ and generational change

Cameras captured the moment the veteran forward wrapped Yamal in a long hug near the centre of the pitch. The gesture, full of warmth and camaraderie, underlined the strong bond between the pair despite not having shared this World Cup journey together on the field.

Observers in Spain have interpreted the image as a powerful metaphor for the passing of the torch between generations – from the experienced leader who helped guide La Roja to the Euro 2024 title, to the prodigious teenager driving their 2026 World Cup triumph.

The embrace also echoed the message delivered by head coach Luis de la Fuente after the final, as he reflected on the spirit within his squad.

“As the coach said after the final: “لقد ضرب اللاعبون مثالا يحتذى به لما يجب ان تكون عليه المجموعة، والفريق، والعايلة”.”

His emphasis on “العايلة” – “family” – seemed to come to life in the interaction between Morata and Yamal, offering a visual encapsulation of the culture that has underpinned Spain’s recent success.

Unity off the pitch matching talent on it

Spain’s back-to-back major tournament wins – the European Championship in 2024 and the World Cup in 2026 – have fuelled talk of a new golden generation, led by Yamal and supported by stars such as Torres.

Yet the scenes at MetLife Stadium suggested their dominance is built on more than technical quality and tactical organisation. The unity between different age groups and between those on the pitch and those watching from the stands has been repeatedly highlighted by players and staff.

The Morata–Yamal moment has quickly circulated on social media and among Spanish fans, hailed as one of the defining images of the night. For many, it illustrates that Spain’s recent glory rests not only on the brilliance of its young talents, but also on a strong sense of belonging and continuity within the national-team set-up.

As Spain celebrated their second World Cup crown under the lights in New Jersey, the long hug between past captain and present star offered a reminder that, for La Roja, the concept of “family” now stretches well beyond the starting XI.
