Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu’s future as assistant coaches of Nigeria’s Super Eagles remains uncertain following the appointment of Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the team.
Ogunmodede and Ilechukwu were initially brought in to assist Augustine Eguavoen in an acting capacity.
They led the team to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, securing a win over Niger Republic but suffering a home defeat to Rwanda.
With the appointment of Chelle as the permanent head coach, Eguavoen’s tenure with the Super Eagles, along with his assistants, has come to an end.
Chelle, who is expected to arrive in Nigeria on Sunday to finalize his contract, will bring three assistant coaches with him.
These assistants were part of his staff during his tenure with Mali’s national team and his recent managerial role at Algerian club MC Oran.
The 47-year-old has been tasked with the significant responsibility of guiding the Super Eagles through the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA.
The Super Eagles, currently winless in Group C after four matches, will face Rwanda’s Amavubi when the qualifiers resume in March.
