Sylvester Jasper set to join Standard Liege after medical with Belgian club

Sylvester Jasper is close to completing a move to Belgian Pro League club Standard Liege, with the Nigeria-eligible forward undergoing a medical ahead of a proposed transfer from Zeleznicar Pancevo.

Transfer market expert Sacha Tavolieri reported that Jasper is currently completing the medical examination required before the deal can be finalised.

Standard Liege and Zeleznicar Pancevo have reached an agreement in principle for the attacker, with the two clubs now exchanging the documents needed to complete the move. If Jasper passes his medical, he is expected to sign a three-year contract with the Belgian side.

The proposed agreement is also understood to include an option allowing Standard Liege to extend the contract for the 2029–30 season.

Jasper was born in London and is eligible to represent England, Bulgaria and Nigeria. His eligibility for Bulgaria comes through his mother, while his connection to Nigeria is through his father.

The forward began his international career with England’s youth teams before becoming provisionally tied to Bulgaria. That occurred after he started a European Under-21 Championship qualifier against the Netherlands in November 2021.

Despite his international links to three countries, Jasper has not represented Nigeria at senior level. His appearance for Bulgaria’s Under-21 side placed him in a position where switching allegiance would be subject to the relevant eligibility rules.

The timing of the proposed transfer meant Jasper was left out of Zeleznicar Pancevo’s squad for their UEFA Conference League qualifying tie against Sporting Braga on Thursday.

Zeleznicar coach Radomir Kokovic confirmed that Jasper’s omission was connected to the impending move. The English-Bulgarian-Nigerian forward was not selected because he was in the final stages of completing a transfer, with the medical and paperwork still to be concluded.

A product of the Fulham academy, Jasper has built up experience with clubs in England and abroad. His previous teams include Colchester United, Hibernian, Bristol Rovers, Portimonense and Slask Wrocław.

The move to Standard Liege would represent the latest stage of a career spent across several leagues and footballing cultures. The Belgian club are now waiting for the medical process and final exchange of documents to be completed before Jasper can formally become their player.

Jasper’s potential arrival would also bring a player with experience of international youth football and eligibility for England, Bulgaria and Nigeria to Standard Liege, subject to the transfer being completed as expected.
